Pug FactsThe Pug originated in China and dates back to 700BC where the dogs were pets in Tibetan monasteries. The breed eventually spread to Japan and then Europe. Pugs have been favored by royalty including Josephine the wife of Napoleon whose pet pug "Fortune" smuggled messages under his collar to Napoleon when Josephine was imprisoned at Les Carmes. William, Prince of Orange also had pet Pugs which he brought with him wherever he went. In fact, one saved his life one night by barking and waking William up just as the Spaniards approached Hermingny in 1572. The Pug has been featured in many paintings including several by William Hogarth's who was a Pug owner and used them in many of his works. Pugs were introduced to America just after the Civil war and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Pug Facts - Caring For Your Pug Although the Pug has a short coat, it does need to be brushed regularly to keep the coat shiny and skin healthy. The Pugs wrinkly face can cause dirt to get trapped in the folds which can later cause an infection, thus special care should be taken to clean out the folds. Since the Pugs face is wide and the eyes protrude, you must be careful to provide food and water dishes that are wide and shallow so he won't damage his eye on the side of the bowl. Like most dogs, Pugs need dental care which includes brushing the teeth a couple of times a week and yearly dental scalings at the vet if necessary. Although they are small, pugs still need exercise - walk your Pug every day to keep him (and you) in good shape! We hope you enjoyed these pug facts!
